These behaviours are perceived as appropriate for a particular time or situation and can vary widely from time to time. The aim of fashion is to create a sense of identity and self-expression. To understand what is considered fashion, we must first understand how it is created and manipulated by society.
Observation patterns are everywhere, from fashion trends to the way people cover themselves. It’s almost impossible to miss them. As a teacher, I have seen a lot of students cover their bodies. Some wear fitted organic sheets or shirts. Others are more conservative and simply wear two pairs of socks and tennis shoes. Students also wear tighter fitting underwear on top and bottom.
Subcultures of fashion are based on the style and clothing of specific groups. For example, there are punks, rockers, and emo kids. These groups wear everything from tartan skirts and button-down shirts to black leather jackets, studded belts, and combat boots. Their clothing is often very loud and displays their personality.
The fashion of these subcultures is different from that of other fashion subcultures. The majority of these subcultures are dominated by younger people. The younger generation picks up the style of a particular urban subculture and adheres to it, often through fashion and lifestyle choices. What they wear is important in molding their identity in society.
The fashion industry has many subcultures, or “groups” that share certain characteristics. For example, there are hippies, environmental activists, high school jocks, and Holdeman Mennonites. These groups have unique clothing, lifestyles, and beliefs. Some of these groups share similar characteristics, while others do not.
In industrialized societies, social group affiliation was a crucial factor in determining individual identity and behavior. Different social classes showed different behavior, and differences in their clothing were often an indication of interpersonal relationships. The Anti-Fashion movement began in the 1990s, when designers like Raf Simons, Anne Demeulemeester, and Maison Martin Margiela began to question idealistic beauty and conventional fashion style. An example of this kind of fashion is the Salvation Army collection, which is a sarcastic reaction to the meaningless clothes produced by the fashion industry.
The idea of wearing clothes that aren’t considered fashionable has a long history. It dates back to the 1950s, when young adolescent women started wearing jeans and plain T-shirts. Their appearances reflected their dissatisfaction with conventional gender roles. In turn, this anti-fashion movement has influenced modern fashion trends, like grunge and punk.
